Memories of the sheer positivity of last year's 2014 <a href="http://www.nepohouse.org/NEPO5k_dont_run.html">NEPO 5k Don't Run </a> fall forth from my photo library (heavy on family shots this year). Not all artists are mentioned as I have lost my concise & very handy map.This truly was the most uplifting, happy-energy NEPO 5k to date (their final version, as it currently stands, will culminate August 29, 2015). Thanks go out to the magnificent curators Klara Glosova, Sierra Stinson and Zack Bent.<br />

<i>In brief</i>: I first saw the finished <a href="http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=10299">John T. Williams Memorial Totem Pole</a> last week. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Today, I spoke to Rick L. Williams at Pike Place Market at 10:45 a.m.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
By 11:10 a.m. I stood in a room at the Frye Art Museum watching a video projection when I faintly heard an audio recording repeatedly stating "Put the knife down," followed quickly by the sound of 5 gunshots.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j_3Ndhdav8U/U9gfUq6geaI/AAAAAAAACF4/FTe1_dwVSyg/s1600/IMG_1119.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j_3Ndhdav8U/U9gfUq6geaI/AAAAAAAACF4/FTe1_dwVSyg/s1600/IMG_1119.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I instantly cued in, and knew what this was from. Two weeks ago I might not have even heard it since there was another video projection in the room (with much louder sound).</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I thought about how painful this would be for the family of John T. Williams to hear in a gallery space, and then I remembered that they both heard and saw much worse in the courtroom. They still must be mentally reliving it everyday.<br />
<br />
I almost forgot that I first <a href="http://ginghamandgold.blogspot.com/2011/04/lounge-around-totem-polenature-theme.html">wrote</a> a design post in relation to this back in 2011. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The <a href="http://fryemuseum.org/exhibition/5518/">show</a> at the Frye is called Your Feast Has Ended, and even in its visually fun moments, it is a powerful commentary on race relations, power, and an appropriation of cultures that (probably) are not your own by birthright. It is a must see show.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Video still from a version of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jXIUl-ERIg&list=TLbXVaDhNgnzl1o2NLFJl5TwFly8auyy9W">this</a> one<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<i> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">In full (PLEASE SKIP AHEAD to the jump if in a hurry)</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">: last week I finally stumbled upon the totem pole in its permanent location on the grounds of the Seattle Center. Oddly, this was a long time coming for me to see in person since it was erected there almost two and a half years ago (and I am at the Seattle Center on a regular basis). I had even spoken to master carver Rick L. Williams on a few occasions as he tirelessly turned this massive trunk of a red-cedar tree into a 34' commemorative totem pole to both honor the memory of his brother John, and also to promote cultural awareness for all peoples of Native American and First Nations heritage.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">When I stopped by Pike Place Market this morning, I was standing off to the side talking to my husband on my cell phone. Rick was walking by and I held the phone down and away from my ear to tell Rick how beautiful his finished work was. We spoke for about 5 minutes (of course, my husband hung up on me during this time!). Although it seems unlikely (due to the sheer number of people interested in his work), Rick says that he remembers me from years ago. He's a charmer!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">I heard about his house in Concrete, about his son who lives there, plus his amazement at the outpouring of love and gratitude he receives around town. He says that in his language there is no word for hate, and there are no swear words. It isn't in his nature to hold a grudge, plus, I can tell you that his smile could light up the world.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">A little while later, when I entered the room at the museum, I wasn't expecting for everything to fall into place when I heard those gunshots. I stood there for a long time trying to hear them again, yet I never did. It felt profound* to be in this space watching two looping videos across the room (one with a modern dance along to tribal drumming and chanting, and the other with a traditional dance set to techno music). </span><br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
In the end, my own three, connected experiences over this past week were: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
unexpected, fortuitous,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
and basically just meant to be.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
This sort of thing happens to me a lot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
Tonight, I'm still thinking about the fact that with his piece of wood and his 3" blade, that John T. Williams was carrying the equivalent of a paintbrush and a canvas. He was just trying to cross the street. May the totem pole be the beacon of peace that it's meant to be. It's the first one raised around here in over 100 years, and it is sure a thing of beauty.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
On a related note, be sure to look at the work of photographer <a href="http://www.matikawilbur.com/blog">Matika Wilbur</a> who is traveling the United States to document tribes in these modern times. Simply stunning.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<br />
The 3rd annual NEPO 5k Don't Run was a roaring success of heartfelt, energetic, (at times) incredibly serious, yet mostly fun filled performances and/or artworks by a multitude of artists. The fact that it occurred over 6 weeks ago is of no matter, for it's never too late to share (I even loaded these images the day after the fact, yet I had lost my map and was daunted by the effort of looking up all of the contributing artists so as to credit them). Luckily, the event was captured by professional photographers and was recently shown to us in full on the <a href="http://www.nepohouse.org/nepo5k2013.html">NEPO website</a>. YES! Peruse for yourself and see just what a fantastical day it was. Thank you Klara Glosova, Sierra Stinson, and Zack Bent. Your artistic endeavors help make Seattle a great place to live (and/or visit).<br />

Two years ago I wrote about my daughter <a href="http://ginghamandgold.blogspot.com/2011/08/my-own-miss-m.html">Miss M</a> and how she's always creating something or other with her hands. Some things never change, and it's time for an update-- especially after her summer spent drawing and painting at the <a href="http://www.gageacademy.org/youth/?page=portfolio_intensive">Gage Academy </a> where there were countless hours spent with paper, pencil, & charcoal under the classical tutelage of <a href="http://georgetownatelier.com/">Tenaya Sims</a>, and with canvas & oil paints via the skilled teachings of contemporary artist <a href="http://kimberlytrowbridge.com/">Kimberly Trowbridge</a> . Today is the final day to see two pieces by each of the 10 teen artists involved (hanging in the 1st floor corridor) at <a href="https://www.seattleartmuseum.org/calendar/eventDetail.asp?eventID=27223&month=8&day=29&year=2013&sxID=&WHEN=">SAM</a>. I need to get there myself asap!</div>

You know you've got a winning piece of jewelry on your hands when each and every time you wear it, someone asks you <i>both</i> of these questions: "Who made it?" and "Where can I find it?" My own necklace (pictured above) is one such as this. It was made by Chicago jewelry artist <a href="http://www.michellestarbuckdesigns.com/">Michelle Starbuck</a> who crafts bold pieces by reworking unique vintage finds (& selling them at a price point everyone will love). These are not precious pieces. They are solid and strong; referencing such things as geometry, equestrian needs, American industry & even architecture.<br />
<br />

Mix it up and wear these pieces with your precious and semi-precious gems, your gold and your silver. Or, as I often do, just wear one noteworthy necklace made of pure brass. I like that it has three rings of varying sizes. I've even attached personal meaning to it where no meaning is. This is what makes our treasured pieces special, makes them ours.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
I recently had a chance to ask Michelle a few questions, and when I asked her about her process, she told me this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"When I'm designing a new piece, I'm always looking for the simplest way to use unique materials. I use vintage findings and I like the focus to be on the materials, so I try not to overcomplicate things. When I was working on the design for the Molecule Necklace, I had tons of the little hexagon pieces connected together. Then I started taking them away until I got down to it's most minimal form. I definitely think less is more. </span></i><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I like having a lot of tools to work with so I can modify vintage pieces. Sometimes I'll find a shape that I like, but the finish is terrible. I like knowing that I can throw it in the tumbler and take the finish off and make it matte or shiny."</span></i></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Locating materials takes a lot of time and energy. Her recent trip to a giant warehouse was a highlight of this year. When I asked her about it, Michelle responded with the following:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><br /></i></span>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>"I've been wanting to go to Providence since I first started making jewelry 8 years ago. The warehouse I went to was sort of a myth in my head and it turned out to be just as amazing as I had hoped. I have to rely on other vendors that live in the area and pick through the findings and resell them online. So it was truly an epic experience to get to dig through it myself for the first time. I learned a lot from that trip and I'm excited to go back and have better strategies for making decisions faster and buying enough. Next time, in addition to taking photos as I go, I'll be bringing a notebook, a calculator, and snacks!"</i></span></div>

Another Ballard landmark is closing their doors for the final time. As of this very moment, that means that you have two nights left in which to visit and have aquavit with a side of pickled herring while listening to live music in their Pussy Room-- shown above with elegant, tufted red velvet wall backings and leather seats (I prefer to call it the Womb Room- as it's the opposite of crass, plus, it's the only area with nary a nude in sight). While the<a href="http://thecoppergate.com/index.html"> Copper Gate</a> has been around since 1946, it was reincarnated 7 years ago into this go-to modern haunt with a Viking ship shaped bar station, and a whole lot of tasteful, almost innocent nude paintings and photographs of women from a bygone era. In all actuality, these women look a whole lot like all of the women that I know (aside from their hair styles), and a rebirth of the natural nude is something that I hope occurs en masse soon.<br />

Since the Copper Gate has been a local place where I've had drinks with girlfriends, dinner with the husband-- & even held my small 40th birthday party (at a fragile time of loss), I will indeed miss it. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the story of a fallen tree and the special pendant that was made from it's branches. Strength, fragility and purity can be seen in this one piece of wood! It came into being when I was pointed towards wood artist <a href="http://www.juliaharrison.net/index.html">Julia Harrison</a>. Thus, in the middle of December 2012, I took a log (in a brown bag) over to Julia to do what she may with it (following a discussion of the approximate size desired). Foremost, she needed to let this very fresh wood dry out a bit though. I was in no hurry. As the months went by, this log later shot out branches and leaves in the warmth of her home. To me, this was a very good sign for the resiliency of the tree itself.</div>

To backtrack, in the dark of night on the first of November last year, our enormous apple tree slumped to its side in the yard. Remarkably, not a single root was exposed. In the days that followed, our eldest daughter was still to be found reading amongst its massive limbs. She would even have slept beneath it in wake had we let her.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Over 80 apples were harvested from the fallen tree- previously unreachable.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
While we thought we had lost the tree, instead, we had it drastically pruned, pulled back into place, and propped up. While still stark looking, it is growing strong this spring. As for the girl, she has just now been given her necklace at an apropos time. Julia even mentioned that the wood is actually translucent when held up to strong light! It's true. I do so love that, and I am forever grateful that Julia would take the time to work on such a small scale project for a friend of a friend.<br />

It's only been one weekend since the second ever <a href="http://onnof.us/indexoff.html">ONN/OF </a>festival flooded the city of Seattle with a well needed dose of light. If you are in said city, go look out your window right now and give a big sigh as you join me in saying "I really wish I could go back to PDL's Northwest Sunburn Unit and catch a dose of those hot, hot (cancer causing) rays."<br />
<br />
So many people turned out for the Saturday night opening that come 10 p.m. the line to get in stretched through the vacant BMW parking lot and out onto the sidewalk. Inside, a DJ was spinning pumping beats as 80's aerobic exercise videos filled a section of the wall. The place was packed and it felt sort of like an art rave. In typical Seattle fashion not that many people were dancing- plus, some of those who did were carrying on with their "site-specific-installation-art" persona. On to some snippets of what was there...<br />

My eyes were (happily) burning from that fierce heat source mentioned above, thus, I took few photos. My memory has etched a strong accounting of these temporary works though thanks to curators, event planners & docents (etc!) Sierra Stinson and Susan Robb. The past becomes our future as the tide comes in and out (over and over). A seamless movement through time that is naturally affected by what came before. Looking back through my blog history shows that a not-so-subtle change has been afoot for all of 2012. In general, there are far fewer posts and the content is most often driven by places that I've been and have taken my own photos of. Of course, there are still posts on talented people that I think you should know about though. That will never change!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

In it's second year, the actively engaging, albeit snail's pace <a href="http://www.nepohouse.org/">NEPO House</a> offerings were just as as expansive as in their premier year. Curated for this iteration by Klara Glosova, Sierra Stinson and Zac Bent, this trio kept us on-the-move beyond the physical. In thinking back, I'm most struck by a theme that I kept seeing--- that of slowness, perseverance, & drive. Be it the bubbles being moved in tiny increments across a plate of glass by Hanita Schwartz, the Endless Goodbye of Alice Gosti and Monica Mata-Gilliam, or witnessing the custom tumbleweed being pushed across the city Erin Elyse Burns, I was made to feel part of a tribe who does what it takes to get through this crazy thing called life.<br />
<br />
Luckily, no training was necessary to power through this art & performance event though. Those who pleased could simply arrive and register with the Vis-a-Vis Society by choosing a race name from their list of possibilities. Due to the size of the crowd, it was important to be flexible if your ideal name was taken though. With first hand experience over disappointment in this arena, I can say that there was a short time period where my group looked like a planned participant (of the dramatic kind) when the only "perfect" name had already been swiped up. Pretty soon however, everyone in my party was comfortable with their names (Heaven Sent, Stumble Upon, and Falling Down), and all was right with the World.<br />

I <a href="http://ginghamandgold.blogspot.com/2011/09/whatever-we-did-we-didnt-run.html">chronicled</a> last year's inaugural event that started in Pioneer Square and ended up at Klara's home/gallery/studio/event-space-- typically a quiet block atop Beacon Hill. This year, that original route was reversed (and even shortened a bit) to enable room to move at the finish line. Care for a glass of lemonade while your clothes dry on the line?</div>

Want to get in on a different type of CSA in Seattle? Instead of fruits and vegetables grown on small farms nearby, how about a bit of Community Supported <a href="http://www.seattlemag.com/article/lxwxh-delivers-local-art-box">Art</a> created for you by talented artists and authors living in our midst? Expanding upon the locavore movement's socio-environmental foundation is <a href="http://www.lengthbywidthbyheight.com/index.html">LxWxH</a> founded by artist and curatorial master <a href="http://www.trianglesforteeth.com/bio.html">Sharon Arnold</a>. Each LxWxH issue promises to provide two pieces of art by two different artists, along with an essay by a local writer. Boxes can be purchased individually for $130, or you can go with the annual subscription for $700 (6 issues). Some artists will even create one of a kind pieces for each box (as did both <a href="http://www.finnertyfinnerty.com/">Ryan Finnerty</a> and <a href="http://www.juliealpert.com/">Julie Alpert</a> for this July/August 2012 issue that I'm showing you a few snapshots from my own box). Not knowing which piece you will receive is part of the allure-- although it was also a bit of a challenge for me to just let go. Had I been able to choose my own, I would have picked different ones, yet I was so pleased with the contents of my box that I wouldn't even trade them if I could! I hear that there are still some boxes of the current issue available. You, too, can get your own special package of art & literature delivered straight to your door. The erasure poems by <a href="http://sporkpress.com/6_1/pieces/Boehmer.html">Adam Boehmer</a> are visual works of art, too. My favorite one is The Water is Cold and I Love You. I absolutely adore that there are three poems typed from a quirky old typewriter onto copies of vintage photographs (perfection). That they were bound together with a handwritten title and signature (in pencil) was another special touch.<br />

Last week, my husband and I were all packed up and driving on our way to do a tour of Washington wine and farmland country when our check engine light turned on and the car started smoking. I jumped out so fast that I spilled my coffee. At that moment, our Walla Walla trip was over before it even began.<br />

We had been preparing to stay one night out on a family member's farm in the Palouse, yet it turns out that the closest I got to a wheat field was while I was standing there on the side of that highway in 93 degree heat. I did see a lot of hay go by on large semi trucks though. Over 90% of the <a href="http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2016112558_hay05m.html">Timothy Hay</a> grown in Ellensburg gets sent to Japan. It's like fine French wine, Cuban cigars, or any other commodity that has a strong lineage directly linked to it's landscape. Just as our server at <a href="http://www.elevagewineco.com/">Brix Elevage Wine Bar</a> was telling us about his friend who reps this hay, in he walked with two Japanese customers who were in town for that sole purpose. We were introduced, and later we went over to talk with them since one of our daughters is in Japan right now.<br />

It's important to note that you can get a glass of great wine for under $7 in this town! Plus, if sun is what you are looking for, the weather on Friday was 97 degrees (30 degrees higher than Seattle).<br />

Being the granddaughter of a Norwegian American architect who moved in the early 1970s from Long Beach, California, to (the middle of nowhere) Nebraska, I am personally familiar with architects who make drastic decisions that don't always make sense. Sometimes it's what we don't know about people that make for the truly grand tale though, and it takes a lot of interest and patience to uncover clues. Enter in to the life of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eero_Saarinen">Eero Saarinen</a>, and of the woman who has spent over 20 years exploring his life. There are curiosities to be found, and even a link to secret war rooms during WWII.... </div>

The current exhibition at The Nordic Heritage Museum focuses on the architect and designer, Eero Saarinen, who was born in Finland and moved to the US at the age of 13. The child of the famous Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, it is interesting to note that the two of them shared both a birthday, and later, a profession. With an artist for a mother, it's clear that he had a strong foundation on which he could (unknowingly) become an innovator of 20th Century Design.<br />

During the member reception I nearly missed the guided tour given by curator and design researcher <a href="http://minamarefat.com/architects/">Mina Marefat PhD</a> who has spent decades on this project. She's an architect, urban designer, architectural historian and professor who teaches at Georgetown University in Washington DC. As such, she really made the show *pop*. I was able to briefly speak with her after her presentation. She is poised, intelligent and lovely.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
As for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eero_Saarinen">Eero Saarinin</a>, in addition to designing famous buildings that we know of such as Dulles Airport, the St. Louis Arch, and the MIT Chapel, the jump start of his career was really in winning a competition for a building that was never even built. MOMA had over 400 entrants for the <a href="http://eerosaarinenexhibition.com/smithsonian-gallery-of-art/">Smithsonian Gallery of Art</a> project. Hands down, Eero's team won (he was the mind behind it) and its design remains an important chronicle of its time.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BZv3IVkN4Sw/T8u4TuGhHUI/AAAAAAAABgs/ULVMTY2emqA/s1600/IMG_3708.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BZv3IVkN4Sw/T8u4TuGhHUI/AAAAAAAABgs/ULVMTY2emqA/s400/IMG_3708.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
You can see that most of the photos that I took don't show his buildings, yet rather, furniture! That classic one legged Scandinavian style of chair that we know so well was actually designed by him, and Mina said that he was the first person to ever design one. A friend of Charles Eames, the two of them often collaborated on furniture designs, and even houses such as <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/25/charles-eames-and-eero-sa_n_625688.html#s106241">this one</a>. I find all of it very fascinating.<br />
<br />
From Mina's research we learned that in 1942 Eero moved to Washington D.C. She immediately questioned why he did so, and it took over 10 years for the information she requested to be declassified. When it was, she was surprised to find that he was actually a member of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) which was the forerunner to the CIA. He designed their state of the art war rooms and even created models of buildings that they planned to blow up in the war. A man of his word, he never personally spoke of this time, and Mina was the first to uncover it! How does one even keep such a secret?<br />
<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Eero Designed the TWA Terminal-- now JFK.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
As for my grandfather, Marvin Rosvold, I know that the root of his major move to Nebraska was the fact that he was given an airplane to fly. Ironically, he had joined the Air Force the same year that Eero moved to Washington DC (to join the OSS). As a WWII P47 fighter pilot, he was shot down on his 65th mission during the Battle of Normandy, yet I never even knew this while he was alive. Luckily, he survived and went on to fly 12 more missions. In later years he designed airports, military bases, churches, and the American Embassy in Saigon, Vietnam (later destroyed). My mother likes to say that my creative streak comes from him. True, true, I'd say...<br />
<br />
If there was one thing I would like to see more of in the exhibit on Eero Saarinen, it would be more photos and possibly actual models of his architectural designs. Mina mentioned that very few originals survived and that recreating them would cost thousands of dollars. In the end, while I learned a lot about his life, his design philosophy, and his furniture design, I was left wanting more concrete visuals of buildings. He was a prolific man, and since my interest was piqued, I've found many images of his works while searching online myself.<br />

To tell the truth, this actually started out as sort of a test post since the font on my last one was all wrong. The recent changes to google blogger created some other oddities, too. I'm just trying to live with it all since I can't fix it. Please bear with me!<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #999999; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">A typical April in the Pacific Northwest is one where the sky is overcast with a serene grey tone. Those intermittent days when the sun truly comes out feels worlds apart from these blue tinged days-- more exciting, yes, yet not nearly as contemplative as the ones where the sky never lets in a single ray of sunlight. From the Mima Mounds of Central Washington to the banks of Hood Canal, see the allure...</span></div>

Make haste as there are 37 incredibly varied and talented artists whose works are displayed salon style in this swooping space. <br />

To see what the opening night party looked like, take a look on <a href="http://www.hifructose.com/index.php/the-blog/2184-red-current-at-roq-la-rue">Hi-Fructose</a> (plus see photos of the artists standing beside their work). I was otherwise engaged that night with out of town guests, yet I hear it was really and truly an epic event. While the fact that these are all female artists is something that doesn't need mention, I did remark upon it to my own (young) artist daughter Miss M as it seems notable that people would never comment on gender if a show only included works by male artists. As in, "Hey, there's a show called White Matter that's featuring 37 male artists." Hmm, no, you would never hear that. Now that I've commented, I'll tell you that this show is indeed overtly centered on women, and yes, it's absolutely amazing.<br />

<div>Seattle is such a great art town. The recent wave of shows and events is pointing in the right direction-- which looks to me to be forward thinking and groundbreaking. With their attentive eye to styling, they often utilize natural abundance as the backdrop (via location, flowers, favors), they go the full mile of individualizing each event by sourcing wardrobe items, creating artistic touches like custom invitations, banners or name plates, sourcing the best florists and bakers (etc). It all comes together like the perfect setting in a movie; yet all along the way, they make it look effortless!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div>Laid back, cool cat <a href="http://thepalmroom.wordpress.com/plant-care-discussion-forum/ask-brandon/">Brandon Peterson</a> opened up his plant-centric wonderland <a href="http://www.thepalmroom.com/">The Palm Room</a> a number of years ago now. Nestled in the center of the historical blocks of Ballard Avenue, his shop has been a welcome delight. Step on in...<br />
<div><br />
<div><br />
<div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lgrbpR4QfZM/TxnxrpFl8xI/AAAAAAAABZQ/V1IDGNHLi9U/s1600/p1040620.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="476" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lgrbpR4QfZM/TxnxrpFl8xI/AAAAAAAABZQ/V1IDGNHLi9U/s640/p1040620.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div></div></div><div><br />
Weather permitting, the front of the shop opens out to the street, and come Sunday, the constant flow of people visiting the Ballard Weekend Farmers Market streams by (and of course, frequently <i>inside </i>the shop). Who wouldn't be drawn towards these fantastical plants for their home? </div><div><br />

</div><div>Ooh, Aah, right? Recently, the shop has taken part in the (monthly) second Saturday Art Walk. From Staghorn Ferns to the latest exhibition based on a George Orwell book called '<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep_the_Aspidistra_Flying">Keep the Aspidistra Flying</a>'. Whoa, giant plant based sculpture based in part upon literature?! That's right up my alley. What about you? If likewise intrigued, be sure to look into their <a href="http://thepalmroom.wordpress.com/classes/january-2012-terrarium-classes/">terrarium classes</a> and you can create your own tiny plant world and hence name it whatever you please- and if you base it on a book, be sure to let me know! </div></div><div><br />

In addition to al this goodness, be sure to note that The Palm Room also provides custom garden and home <a href="http://www.thepalmroom.com/index.php?q=content/howwework">design</a> services. Look out your frosty window and give them a ring-- my guess is that you'll want some indoor advice now, and a whole lot of snow damage replacement for your garden come spring!</div><div><br />

Put on in conjunction with the <a href="http://www.nat.is/travelguideeng/reykjavik_nordic_house.htm">Nordic House</a>, Reykjavik, Iceland, this fabulous experience was curated by <a href="http://shoplifter.us/">Hrafnhildur Arnardottir</a>. I loved every minute of it-- from the easily wearable to the Avant-garde. Spot the clothing throughout the museum; some of which are arranged so secretly as to surprise and amuse you!<br />

Thank you to all of the designers for sending your remarkable garments all of the way to Seattle! It's a beautiful and highly varied show that features a multitude of talent. The Norwegian and Swedish parts of me are thrilled to be Nordic, too!<br />
<br />
For the sake of getting the news out for people to see it during these last few days, I rushed this post -- including pictures and links to the main sites only. If anyone wants information on certain pieces, please let me know! I look forward to the next show in 2 years... How about you?! Enjoy!Carriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14090592161264170619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1796864155491758301.post-83493974600033918742011-10-30T21:05:00.000-07:002011-11-10T17:58:56.660-08:00Ghostly Ship-Wrecked Carnival Life<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EXN2QXDO4xs/Tq39uuuwHPI/AAAAAAAABRM/7XoIJEmDKn8/s1600/94Musicians.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424px" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EXN2QXDO4xs/Tq39uuuwHPI/AAAAAAAABRM/7XoIJEmDKn8/s640/94Musicians.jpg" width="640px" /></a></div><br />
The hauntingly historic leanings of two skilled artists in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood has blended seamlessly into their home life, too. Submerge yourself into the carnival atmosphere of <a href="http://www.thenautilusstudio.com/">Yvette Endrijautzki </a>and <a href="http://www.jethanielpeterka.com/">Jethaniel (Spyder) Peterka's </a><br />

I am in love with this well curated, ever changing space. The two of them spent an intense year remodeling this location into a work of art. By utilizing unique, <a href="http://www.seconduse.com/node/61364">salvaged materials</a> they have created a one of a kind environment that is infused with otherworldly richness and mystery.<br />

<div><div><div>From classical oil paintings, assemblage art, "foraged" jewelry, and beyond, the art they make themselves (and showcase by other artists), form stories that seem to be created with an industrial eye of rebirth (the word <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk">steampunk</a> might come to mind-- yet in it's own unique way). There are references to fairy tales, myths, magic, rituals, tarot, history, etc. You might find aged metal pieces-- or skulls and vertebrae made new; fragments of past medical tools-- along with references to the cycle of birth and death. The fragility and precariousness of life is repeatedly seen. With that notion in mind, I believe that this post is just in time for The Day of the Dead, Halloween, & All Souls Day.<br />

Be sure to stop by sometime to be charmed while watching the Magician <a href="http://www.acephalemagic.com/">Acep Hale</a>-- or maybe even <a href="http://www.freewebs.com/dandelionjunkqueens/">The Dandelion Junk Queens </a> performing in their own magnetic ways.<br />

It's certainly a place to visit on Art Walk. In addition, you can now find The Nautilus Studio on <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/thenautilusstudio?page=1">Etsy</a>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5wwGwmNW6U8/Tq39lSqzSII/AAAAAAAABQU/fNeUAAG4fhM/s1600/100_5912.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5wwGwmNW6U8/Tq39lSqzSII/AAAAAAAABQU/fNeUAAG4fhM/s400/100_5912.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I feel so lucky to have had both artists teach my daughter at <a href="http://www.gageacademy.org/">The Gage Academy</a> over the past few years-- something which will continue. Their studio has given me the chance to get to know them, and I must say that Yvette and Jethaniel are some of the most welcoming and encouraging people that I know! Be sure to check out their art-- Yvette specializes in intense, intricate assemblage art, and Jethaniel uses his classic atelier training to paint stunning, modern oil paintings (amongst other things for both).<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>First off, spend a few years in Europe like <a href="http://www.sabrinalovesbags.com/Bio.html">Sabrina Love</a> did. If that's not an option (!), simply watch foreign films while drinking red wine and wearing high heels. As an alternate plan, you could even wear ballet flats and sip green tea! Actually, it doesn't really matter if you are wearing a little black dress with your favorite necklace--- or, your favorite jeans with a fisherman's sweater and worn in boots. Pulling it altogether will be your purse. Sabrina Love has this down pat.<br />

Sabrina has truly mastered the art of making bags that you will want to use for every occasion. Her natural affinity for designing such pieces stems from over 10 years working as a costume designer and a stylist. Of note, while she uses only the finest of Italian Lamb leather (along with fine hardware from abroad), the construction is done here in the United States.<br />

As for me, I have one of the small clutch styles-- the <a href="http://www.sabrinalovesbags.com/Barcelona_Azul.html">Barcelona Azul</a>, and I tend to use it for nearly every night out I have which involves long conversations and a candlelit spot at the table (which is not often enough)! Find <i>your</i> perfect bag <a href="http://www.sabrinalovesbags.com/Collection.html">here</a> (just remember that there are some styles not on the web page). I think it's fitting that Sabrina is a good friend's close pal-- and that we met many years ago at my favorite little spot in Ballard, <a href="http://www.sambarseattle.com/">Sambar</a>, which is a jewel of a space showcasing enduring elegance and design (in it's most sincere, modern French way). I think I see a common thread here... Enjoy!<br />

In a good way, my world has been turned around lately and I'm just getting my sea legs (so to say)! I am busier than ever, so I'm sorry for the few weeks delay in posting again. Well, right back at it:</div><div><br />
</div><div>Here's some details from the <a href="http://www.designsponge.com/about">Grace Bonney</a> book signing event at <a href="http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/index.jsp">Anthropologie</a> last Thursday night in downtown Seattle (thanks to a great friend who planned the night). In my 2 minutes (or less) speaking with Grace, we talked about music-- most specifically, about <a href="https://www.facebook.com/WILDFLAG">Wild Flag</a> (so, of course; also about <a href="http://www.sleater-kinney.com/">Sleater-Kinney</a> and Portland). Here's a live Wild Flag video from a <a href="http://kexp.org/Default.aspx">KEXP</a> 2011 <a href="http://sxsw.com/">SXSW </a>performance:</div><div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/q25zB3lJqgY?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div><br />
</div><div><br />
</div><div>Back to the book. Wow, it's a behemoth! You could buy two of them and use them as weights to tone your arms. Once toned, give one copy to a friend so that you can compare favorite pages. You'll be on your own to figure how to keep <i>both</i> arms in shape-- yet you will be all the richer in the home design realm! </div><div><br />

Participants started warming up (by chatting) in Occidental Park where there was an anonymous registration system handled by the <a href="http://www.myspace.com/visavissociety">Vis-a Vis Society</a>. All we had to do was choose a name and hope that it wasn't already taken. We were A-OK on that front, so once our numbers were pinned to our shirts, I hopped on over to buy myself a t-shirt which was silk-screened on the spot for me by <a href="http://www.duck-ugly.com/U_S.html">Duck Ugly</a>. It sure is nice (and a little wrinkled from being carried around in a bag):<br />

There were some gritty societal elements, numerous architectural touches that I'd never noticed while driving by, a bird's eye view of the crazy Sounders traffic; and finally, the arrival at a contemporary home filled with people and art. </div><div><br />

The work that went into planning the minutia of tiny details must have felt never ending. I have no idea what took me so long, yet in the last year, I have finally become a convert to the Prairie Underground line of clothing. The three pieces that I own have carried me stylishly to fashion shows, weekend markets, cocktail parties and even a middle-school parent night. There's a little something for everyone in their designs. You'll notice that some pieces are definitely structured; while others are certainly not. In a way that'll make you want to <i>kiss the ground</i>, these clothes are also comfortable, durable and washable. These thoughtful co-designers met in Nebraska in the 1980's, and have since carried their early influences out West to Seattle-- to the delight of a city that thrives on having eco friendly, local choices. In each of their collections, Prairie Underground has utilized sustainable fabrics such as hemp and organic cotton. They also help support the livelihood of a diminishing trade of local sewing contractors. <i>There's so much to love</i>... <br />
